Rigid PIR Insulation boards above between and below rafters at pitch roof level

Application - Pitched Roofs

Rafter Level Insulation

including above, above + between, between + below, and below rafters

Insulating at pitched roof level mainly falls into two categories - new / re-roofing projects and retro-fit projects.

Where appropriate, insulating above and between rafters is probably the preferred solution due to the ease of application and the spacial gain within the property.

Consideration should be given to the amount of space available, in which to install the required insulation.

One challenge may be Building Control who may try to inflict height restrictions.

Loft conversions and retro-fitting insulation at rafter level where access from above is not practicable creates a number of challenges.

Most important is the achievement of the required U Value within the space (and the budget) available, and ensuring the effectiveness of the preferred / selected method.

Insulation Installation Locations

Warm roof rafter level applications include insulation ...

Above Rafter installations ...

are common where there is a desire to leave the rafters exposed for aesthetic reasons, but may require planning approvals from Building Control. Other examples might include warehouse roofs supported by metal girders.

Above and Between Rafters installations ...

is the most common installation practice in a 'new-build' or re-roofing situation

Pitch roof rigid insulation boards between rafters

Between Rafters only installations ...

may be required where insulation above rafter is impractical due an existing roof being in place, or planning restrictions, and Insulation below the rafter level encroaches upon the available headroom in the space below

Between and Below Rafters ...

is the most common retrofit method, but may be required where insulation above rafter is impractical due an existing roof being in place, or planning restrictions

Below Rafters only ...

where the depth of the rafters is extremely limited, or where there is reluctance to remove existing ceiling boards.

The brief examples above are indicative of the complexity of a pitched roof build-up including insulation.

To further complicate the issue is the U Value requirement stipulated by Building Control.

U-Value calculations may involve the participation of an architect or engineer, as

Finally, there is the level of funds available to execute the project. Quite a balancing act!
