Rigid Insulation Boards
Rigid insulation boards are most commonly manufactured using PIR (polyisocyanurate) rigid foam, laminated with pure aluminium foil facings.
PIR boards are available with glass tissue facings. They are also manufactured with lamination to other elements such as plasterboard, plywood and bitumen polypropylene fleece.
The highest performance is achieved from boards manufactured using Phenolic foam.
These boards benefit from increased performance and reduced thickness requirements, which is, of course, reflected in the increased cost of these products.
Expanded and extruded polystyrene come in at the lower end of the rigid board insulation scale due to their poorer insulation properties and reduced fire protection performance.
Commonly, polystyrene boards are used for under-floor insulation - EPS70. However, professional builders can favour specialist EPS and XPS products.
Mineral Wool Slabs and Rolls
Stone mineral wool offers both thermal and acoustic insulation properties, and are resistant to fire.

The result is a mass of fine, intertwined fibres that are compressed and bonded using either petroleum based chemicals. Loft rolls are commonly 1160mm wide and partially perforated to produce either 2 rolls 580mm wide or 3 rolls 386mm wide.
Rafter Roll are semi-rigid and are specifically designed for installation between rafters in warm roofs and loft conversions.

They are also commonly used in retro-fit situations to add directly to finished plaster-boarded walls to improve their thermal performance.
Foil Insulation, Heat Reflecting Membranes, and Radiant Barriers
Multi-foil is the most popular of the foil insulation genre, as it is designed to inhibit the condensation difficulties that are inherent in bubble foil and single foil products.
Most commonly, multi-foil insulation is used to complement insulation boards, slabs or rolls to achieve optimum U Values, while minimising the width of roofs, walls and floors.
Single Bubble and Double Bubble foils are used in cavity walls; timber-frame walls; dry-lining and under floor.
Breather foil membranes used in roofing and timber-frame walling solutions are becoming increasingly popular.
Single foil can be used in cavity wall and ground floor under floor situations, but will create condensation problems if installed incorrectly or used inappropriately.
